Fundamentally, timing is controlling when things happen.
Good timing is achieved when an action is started at precisely the correct moment and controlled throughout the time allocated for that action.
The effect of the skilful use of timing can be very dramatic. Bad timing is the result of allowing something to happen at the wrong time.
You need precise methods of communication when dealing with the subject of timing - the same kind of words or language. Dancers wishing to achieve a high level of rhythmic interpretation must know precisely how much music can be allocated to every movement made during the dance.
You have to develop a specific language for allocating a precise number of beats or parts of a beat of music to teach foot or body movement used in every figure of each dance.
This language is very simple and consists of a few words, namely:
SLOW (S), QUICK (Q), AND (&) EH (a), 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Using combinations of these few but very important words, it is possible to specify precisely the number of beats or parts of a beat of music that should be
used for every movement made during a particular figure.
